Transcription Of Coldplay on MTV Italy (November 2000)

Presenter: "Here we are. As promised I'm here with Coldplay. Hi guys! I'm really pleased to meet you! So, how are you?"
Chris: "Good, very good"
P: "I really like your music! Sometimes while one of your videos is on, I play along on the guitar!"
C: "Well, we really like your show, though we can't watch it!"
(General laughter)
P: "Chris, I know that you met at college, roundabout three years ago. What do you remember about it?"
C: "Nothing! Well, erm… It was great - we were thinking about this yesterday, we were talking about it - it was just great because we were just sitting in a little room like this, just writing songs all the time. And then three years later we can play them in Italy and all over the world, you know. So it was a really exciting time, you know."
C: "Sí, sí é vero!"
P: "Chris, can you speak Italian?"
C: "Perfecto, yeah"
(Everybody laughs)
P: "What can you say?"
C: "Everything! Absolutely everything."
P: "Like? Pasta, pizza…"
C: "No, I'm not going to say anything… Erm, Jonny, you can probably"
Jonny: "Nope!"
(General laughter)
P: "Now, lets talk about your album 'Parachutes'. Have you ever tried parachuting?
Will: "No"
C: "No; well, we've done everything else. We jumped out an aeroplane without a parachute. We nearly went in a balloon one time, but Jonny doesn't like being high up."
P: "So, why did you choose this title? Maybe because your music is your parachute?"
C: "Yeah!"
P: "I feel wound up!"
(General laughter)
P: "Anyway, though you're so young, you reached the Top Ten with your album. Did you expect such a big success?"
W: "Well, we had the hope of doing well, but we didn't expect it to happen so quickly. It was a bit more rapid than what we thought."
C: "We knew from the start that we were the best band in the world. Ever!"
P: "Okay"
C: "Better than the Beatles, better than all of them!"
P: "Better than Oasis?"
C: "Who? No, no, no of course not! But we were excited about it. We're not bad though!"
P: "Now, let's talk about Yellow; can you tell us something about the making of the video?"
W: "I wasn't there. There was none of us apart from him, so…"
C: "I was there. There was so much rain!"
P: "Like today?"
C: "Yeah, exactly. We had this idea for the video: it was going to be all four of us on the beach, just walking in the sunshine, and then we got there and there was just water and rain everywhere, and so we just did the video in 20 minutes so that we could go home. And it turned out right."
P: "So, when you thought of the video, you had another project, right?"
C: "Yeah"
P: "So, now we're gonna watch the video…"
(Back in the studio)
P: "We're back with Coldplay… So, last week you won a Q Award. What was it like to be so close to popular stars?"
C: "Every pop star you can imagine, they were in this room, and we were there too. And it was very funny because we always think of ourselves like the new boys at school, and, you know there were all these big pop stars but
we got this award for best album. That's why we were really excited. I think we quite enjoyed it, didn't we?"
W: "Definitely… we were sitting next to the Gallagher brothers and all sorts of famous people like Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue. It was weird, but good fun."
P: "Would you call yourselves a Britpop band?"
C: "Well sort of. We're British and we play pop. Brit Rock, Brit heavy rock… he, he, he!"
P: "You're very popular in Europe. Are you ready to go to America?"
W: "Well, we're going in February, so hopefully we'll be ready by that time; but I think the album is coming out today."
P: "Last summer you were at the Roccaforte Festival in Italy."
C: "With Marlene Kuntz!"
P: "Yes, with Marlene Kuntz. How did you feel playing in front of an Italian audience?"
C: "Frightened"
P: "Frightened?"
W: "Yep… Actually, there were 50 people there - you wouldn't call it an audience!"
C: "There was our record company and a few drunks; it wasn't really an audience. The thing is that we leave England and we don't know if anyone outside of England knows anything about our band. So, it's quite scary for us because we never know if we're popular or unpopular; or if people like our songs, or if they hate our songs. And in Roccaforte there weren't many people. But it was Ok, it's an amazing place… this castle…"
P: "Have you chosen a video?"
C: (Laughing) "Oh, sorry, they just showed him (Jon) on TV and it was really funny!"
W: "Yep, we've chosen a video"
C: "Oh yeah, we chose 'Gas Panic' live by Oasis…"
(Back in the studio)
P: "Were back! Do you like Oasis?"
C: "Yes, definitely!"
P: "Are they your favourite band?"
C: "Yes, but well, that song… the first time we heard it was when we were recording Yellow in the studio, early this year. And so we heard that and it was good"
P: "Tonight you're playing at Alcatraz. What should the audience expect from your show? A lot of energy?"
(Everybody: "Yes"
C: "Nope"
P: "Sweet melody?"
C: "No, no melody! We just sit there, play one song. Maybe not! Maybe we won't even turn up! He, he, he!"
P: "Ok, so, this is your album. Can you please sign it for us? Thank you for having bee here!"
C: "Thank you! And there
will be melody at the concert! We'll give loads of energy, cos we've been eating such good food!"
