Transcript of Coldplay on Studio 68, XFM on the 5th July 2000
(Presenter) "I'm joined here by Will, Johnny and Guy from Coldplay, 'cos Chris, oh, Chris has come back in. "Hello guys how are you?" (Chris) "Good thanks" (Presenter) "Good, are you alright? Have you got your bass guitar, 'cos last night we had Crashlands on - they didn't have a bass with them" (Guy) "We've got one" (P) "Now, you got it yeah. Alright, now is it true that I did the first radio interview with you?" (Will) "It is" (Crew) "Hooray, yay" (Chris) "We've been told it is, we've been told it is" (P) "So, now basically you're very successful now and it's all down to me? Oh, God I'm a legend, thank you! Now, has… What are you doing with my microphone? Umm, has, has, has - oh I can't think of the question" (Chris) "Howzat? (P) "Howzat? Now then, now then! (Laughter) (Chris) "Not out!" (P) "How has life changed right since your first ever blooming interview with me? You've gone mad - big time now, haven't you?" (Chris) "We haven't (sniffs) changed at all." (Laughter…) (P) You've got an entourage with you… (Chris) We've got an entourage, yeah; we're like flipping Puff Daddy! (P) Yeah, you're Duff Paddy! (Chris) We've got Tara Palmer Tompkinson with us (P) Right, so after the interview with me, you've obviously gone on to do millions of interviews. Apart from mine, what's the best thing you've done so far?" (Guy) "Nothing shades anywhere near as good as yours!" (P) "Have you done the kids shows yet?" (Chris) "Which ones?" (P) "I dunno, Ant and Dec" and stuff like that? No?" (Chris) "Nah, not yet" (P) "Just like, all the radio stuff then?" (Chris) We nearly did FBI, didn't we? (Others) "Did we?" (Chris) "Did we? I think we did…Ah, we've been told we didn't!" (P) "Ahh, good one - that's one of the ones that's not rating at the moment. Ant and Dec are the ones at the moment aren't they? They've only got high ratings cos my show's not on at the moment though! So, anyway, it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys - everyone loves you now, don't they?!" (Chris) "Well, we're the new Travis! (P) "Are you?" (Chris) "Travis are going away for a bit. And they said to us like, would you mind just stepping in for a bit. (P) "Stepping in and becoming the new Travis!" (Chris) "That's right, yeah" (P) Cool, so, have you got more groupies now? I wanna ask you interesting things. Are there more ladies in your lives now? (General laughter, long pause) Right, okay, have you started dreaming of buying houses, cars and little islands where you can put all your enemies on and then be-head them? (Chris) "Have we?" (Will) "Nah" (P) "No" (Chris) "We've all got new shoes, haven't we?" (Will) "Yeah, shoes, trousers" (Chris) "You can't see them on the radio, but we're all wearing new shoes" (P) Have you got any money yet? They don't give you money for years do they, when you're in a band? (Chris) "Nah, no" (Chris) "Tuppence every four weeks!" (P) "So, you've been doing all these gigs. My mate saw you at, well they've seen you at every gig you've ever basically done! Cos they're y'know big fans of yours (Chris) "Are they?" (P) "Yeah, they are, I'm not! (Laughter) No, I am as well - really good. And they say live you're brilliant. Are you working hard on your live stuff?" (Chris) "Not really, no!" (P) "No, you're not?" (Chris) "No, we just normally drink till show time!" (P) "What are you doing with your days now?" (Chris) "What do we do, what do we do? We just travel around in our bus really, don't we?" (Guy) "On our days off was that?" (P) "Yeah, you don't have any do you?" (Johnny) "Uuh, we've had four just recently, which was nice." (P) "Four days off" (Chris) "Johnny's been in France, haven't you? (P) "What have you been doing there? (Chris) "Using a friends villa" (P) "Come to the mic, what have you been doing?" (J) "I've been on holiday" (P) Have you?? Was there no sun there? (J) Yeah there was (Chris) "Chalky!" (P) Now, listen. Right, I've got your itinerary here - I don't know how I've got this - I think they found it on your website. You have not got any days off ever" (Chris) Haven't we? That's a blank page! (P) You're going to Japan (others agree) You're going to Japan and Europe and Scandinavia - what countries have you done so far?" (Will) England, Holland, Scotland and Holland (P) What's it like in Holland for gigs? (Chris) Very relaxed clapping (P) Was it in Amsterdam? Yeah? Fantastic! So, have you got any plans to go to the States? (Chris) Not really (Guy) No, that's not priority at the moment (Chris) We wanna go to Disneyland when we've got some money (P) Oh, okay (Chris) Don't we? Johnny wants to go - he's never been (P) Well, we asked people to send in some questions for you and basically they've all come in from girls asking to speak to Chris (Producer) Someone pretended to be your mum Chris - said she needed to speak to you desperately (Chris) That would be my mum! (Pr) Unless your mum sounds like a thirteen year old girl (P) Where do you get the inspiration for your excellent lyrics… oh that's a rubbish question form Louise! What will the next single off the album be? Is that a good question? (Chris) Guys? Ask Guy - our bass player (Guy) We haven't decided yet, I don't think (P) Come on, you came here Chris… (Chris) Trouble, I think it might be called Trouble. What are our people telling us? Our people are telling us Trouble - that's what we've been told to say (P) Album's quality by the way (Chris) Thanks a lot (P) I do have one complaint though. (Chris) Problem? What Tom? (P) Tim! (Laughter) (Chris) You have a go at us; we have a go at you! (P) Well, my one problem is that I love Bigger Stronger and cos I've only got a limited amount of space in my car C.D player - it's only a six C.D one. And that means that I've got your album in, but I really wanted to hear that on the album as well, but it's not on the album. (Chris) Put it on C.D two (P) Yeah but I have specials on the other five (Chris) Alright Tom, do what you like!! (P) Alright, when you came in, you said "play Badly Drawn Boy" didn't you? I've got it for you here. Talk to you in a minute…"
(P) Quality track there, umm, and he has the same producer as you, we were just discussing - yeah? (Agreement) I asked this question once to Noel Gallagher - what does a producer actually do? What's his job? For a layman like me. (Chris) He keeps us from killing each other really, doesn't he? Does he? He does. (P) Do they have lots of influence over when you go into the studio? (Chris) We really wanted to co-produce - he doesn't really believe in the notion of production like where you sit in a big chair and just tell everyone what they're gonna play, so it was just like the five of us sat in a room really, and he just became one of the band really for the weeks, didn't he? (P) But I've got something to play you, cos we do this thing called 'Version Excursion' where one song sounds a little bit like another. And we're not saying it's bad at all, cos sometimes you take a bit of a track and make it into another track which is really good. This one was spotted last night - this is Badly Drawn Boy, Disillusion… and this is Stevie Wonder - what do you reckon? Similar do you reckon? (Chris) Uhhh (Will) Starts with drums (Laughter) (P) It's kind of similar. Where's the other one - we got sent another one. This is Oasis, Sunday Morning Call… and this is Radiohead, Fake Plastic Trees. (Chris) It's the same chord you see (Guy) Same chord, different key (Chris) Is it a different key? Oh I didn't notice. We have session musicians you see! We're just here to talk. (P) Okay, well you do that. So you're playing for us Monday at HMV (Chris) Yeah, do you know what? It's our hundredth gig, that (P) Ahh, brilliant. What are you gonna do there? What do they do there - I've never been to one of those. Do they just clear out the store? (Chris) We're gonna arrive in a chopper and then play two tunes to backing tracks, and then go away in a big car - back to our Hilton. (P) You lie!! So, when are you doing TOTP? (Together) This week (Chris) Tomorrow (Guy) Tomorrow we're recording it - it's going out on Friday (P) So, you went in the charts last week, straight in at number 4 didn't you? That is quality. Were you all sitting round somewhere, like a radio, waiting to hear it? (Chris) No (P) Did you already know? (Chris) Umm, kind of, yeah (P) Come on, you must have been excited (Will) Well the thing is you get a phone call from your man upstairs and you're going out that says you're at this position - it kind of takes the gloss away a little bit. (P) But, isn't that brilliant, cos all that hard work you've done and now it's paying off. I was flicking round the radio the other day to make sure I was the best and I got to Radio 1 and they were talking about your Coldplay, your Robbie Williams - they were putting you in with all these A1 bands (Chris) Yeah, it's amazing, Radio1 have been ace to us as a radio station, you know not that this… Anyway, whatever! (P) Obviously they're not nearly as good as XFM. (Chris) We know everyone we're talking to Tom, and we… what was I going to say? Anyway, we were gonna do this thing with Ronan Keating and stuff in a big park in Scotland. (Will) Phil, what's this? (Laughter) (Chris) And our manager turned it down cos he didn't think we'd wanna do it (P) So who else is on TOTP with you tomorrow? (Chris) I dunno - will Kylie be on? (Guy) I can't remember is gonna be doing it live, but it will be a couple of people (Chris) Samantha Mumba. Maybe be the Boys will be there - the Venga Boys (P) Ahh, I love the Venga Boys (Chris) We played with them down at the Falcons (P) Are you excited about doing stuff like that, cos when I was a kid that's all I wanted to do. So how big are you gonna get? You were on stage at Glastonbury and you said next time we're gonna be a stadium band or something (Guy) A stadium band?!? (Producer) No, you did, you said "you're lucky that you've seen us now, because next time we're gonna be playing a big stadium like Bon Jovi. (Chris) I know, it's cos everyone has a goat us for being all humble and everything, I thought it was about time we took the reigns. (P) I think you should stay humble, cos it's like every time we get a band in here I wonder what they're gonna be like. Whereas I know when you guys come in I know your gonna have a decent chat and you're nice blokes. (Chris) Yeah, but to people we come across as being so boring, but we're not boring are we? (P) No, you're not boring at all. You're doing good music man, good music (Chris) Yeah, that game of Scrabble last night was brilliant (Laughter) (P) Alright, hang around guys, I'm gonna play some more music.
